Tested Cameras

LocalNanny works with any IP camera that supports H.264 or H.265 video over RTSP. Most compatible cameras also support ONVIF, which lets LocalNanny auto-discover them on your network for easy setup. Cameras without ONVIF can still be added manually. Below are cameras we’ve personally tested and verified.

Amcrest 5MP PoE Camera Our top recommendation for LocalNanny. This Amcrest camera offers excellent 5MP video quality, reliable night vision, and Power over Ethernet (PoE) for simple single-cable installation. Works perfectly with LocalNanny’s auto-discovery feature.

Power note: PoE cameras require power over the Ethernet cable — your router likely doesn’t provide this on its own. You’ll need one of the following:

  • A PoE switch (connects multiple cameras, recommended if you plan to add more)
  • A PoE injector (single-port, plugs between your router and camera — simplest option for one camera)
  • A 12V DC power adapter if your camera model supports a separate power input

Not the right fit? Browse all Amcrest PoE cameras to find the perfect option for your needs. All Amcrest PoE cameras with ONVIF support work great with LocalNanny.

Lorex 4K Outdoor IP Camera Tested and verified with LocalNanny. While designed for outdoor use, this camera excels as a baby monitor with stunning 4K video quality and excellent audio. Color night vision lets you see your baby naturally (not just black and white), and the high resolution means you can see every detail, even when digitally zooming in. Clear audio pickup helps you hear every sound.

Verified Compatible Brands

  • Amcrest — Extensively tested, works great. Affordable with good night vision.
  • Lorex — Fully compatible. Good video quality at reasonable prices.
  • Dahua — Compatible (same protocol family as Amcrest).
  • Hikvision — Compatible with RTSP streams.
  • Reolink — Compatible with RTSP-enabled models. Note: RTSP is disabled by default on most Reolink cameras — you’ll need to enable it in the Reolink app or web interface before connecting with LocalNanny.

What to Look For

When shopping for a camera to use with LocalNanny, make sure it has:

  • H.264 or H.265 video codec support
  • RTSP streaming capability
  • ONVIF protocol support (recommended — enables auto-discovery)
  • Built-in microphone (if you want audio monitoring)
  • Good night vision (essential for baby monitoring)
  • PoE (Power over Ethernet) recommended for reliability — single cable provides both power and network

Important: Some cameras (such as Reolink) ship with RTSP disabled by default. You may need to enable RTSP in your camera’s app or web interface before LocalNanny can connect. Check your camera manufacturer’s settings if auto-discovery or manual RTSP connection isn’t working.

Most modern IP cameras from reputable manufacturers support RTSP and will work with LocalNanny. The app also includes a built-in Camera Template picker with pre-configured RTSP paths for many popular brands.
